For the second consecutive year and owing to persi For the second consecutive year and owing to persistent uncertainty as to the progression of Covid-19, it remains improbable that any South African event catering for large groups will be permitted prior to October 2021.

Accordingly, and in defence to all committed and potential participants, it has, with regret, been decided to cancel the 2021 Royal Show in its entirety.

The Royal Agricultural Society acknowledges with appreciation persons and organisations who have already devoted time and resources in preparing for this year’s event, which regrettably is ‘not to be’. – Press release, Royal Agricultural Society of Natal

Plaas Media’s Eastern Cape journalist, Carin Ven Plaas Media’s Eastern Cape journalist, Carin Venter, and her Irish terrier, Geoffrey, got quite the surprise when a female night adder greeted them in the garage.

Nikki Durrant handles the adder with great care.
Due to its camouflage, the night adder (Causus rhombeatus) can easily conceal itself from predators and prey. They usually seek shade on hot and humid days.

While extremely painful, the night adder’s bite is not life threatening. However, the snake is still considered dangerous and any person bitten must seek medical treatment. Should a pet be bitten, severe and painful swelling can occur, and a veterinarian should be consulted.

For more information, contact Arnold Slabbert, problem animal control specialist and consultant at Wildline Port Elizabeth, on 082 332 3660.

You have probably been thinking about starting a v You have probably been thinking about starting a vegetable garden and growing your favourite vegetables and herbs, but never quite got around to it. You are not alone, as many people would love to grow their own food but never do. This is mainly because many of us think that gardening requires lots of time we do not have.

The secret to striking a balance between your busy schedule and eating healthy, nutritious meals directly from your garden, is to design a garden that matches the time you have available. Do not start by imagining how much time the garden will take.

The SA Canegrowers’ Association has launched its The SA Canegrowers’ Association has launched its Home Sweet Home campaign, which encourages South Africans to buy local sugar products to help safeguard the one million livelihoods the industry supports.

In the past, weak trade protection has seen a major increase in cheap sugar imports flooding South Africa from deep-sea countries such as Brazil, the United Arab Emirates as well as the Southern African Customs Union (SACU). For every ton of imported sugar that floods our shores, our local South African industry loses R4 000. These cheap, low-quality imports have caused the local industry to lose just over R2,2 billion in the last year alone.
